What types of adult diapers are there?

The first term that comes to mind when it comes to unwanted urine loss is: the diaper. We know this mainly from its use in babies. For adults, there are a number of different types of products:

• Pants, also called diaper pants or incontinence pants
• Slip, also called diaper for adults, and in Belgium, it is called the adhesive pamper
• Inserts, also known under the name insert diapers
• Flex, a hip belt system that is widely used in healthcare institutions

Pants-incontinence pants

Incontinence pants are pants where you simply get in and out.

It looks a lot like normal underwear, it is only a bit thicker because of the cotton wool that is incorporated in it.

The pants are a bit more expensive than, for example, briefs and inserts, but they also have great advantages.

• They excellently collect urine and/or feces.
• You are well covered by the product.
• You can dispose of them completely after use.
• You hardly see them under clothing.

Briefs /Adult Diaper

Briefs are most like the diaper we know from babies. They are secured to the hip with adhesive strips. After use, they go into the trash. An advantage of a slip is that you can do it as tight as necessary so that the chance of leakage is minimal.

Briefs are cheaper than pants. This has to do with the elastic used in pants.

It is very expensive to process the 30 meters of elastic in the pants and at the same time place the cotton pulp and moisture-absorbing SAP granules in it.

Producing briefs is easier and cheaper. Briefs have superior absorption.

Slips- Incontinence Product

Slips go to the highest reception of all products, together with inserts.
• Where pants go down when they absorb too much urine, this is much less the case with briefs. You can also retighten them so that they are properly fixed again.
• The slip is also a product that is easy to use for people with a disability.

Inserts -Incontinence Product

Inserts are strips of moisture-absorbing material.

They can be used separately in tight-fitting underpants or in special fixation pants.

Inserts can absorb large amounts of urine, the largest up to 4 liters.

There are many different inserts on the market. They differ in the material they are made of, the amount of moisture they can absorb or the model.

Do not confuse inserts with a panty liner.

That is a very thin sanitary napkin, mainly intended to absorb light menstruation and fluid secretion.

Pads only contain cotton wool that is hardly able to absorb and retain moisture.

It is precisely the moisture-absorbing SAP granules in into materials that ensure that urine is absorbed and converted into a gel that no longer releases moisture.

These granules are not present in sanitary towels.

Inlay in pants

People often get to work with their materials themselves.

For example, when they feel insecure, they use an insert in pants.

They reason: if my insert is full, it will leak into the pants. But it does not work like that.

If an insert is already full, the urine will flow past it, often down your leg. In fact, an insert in a pants or slip only increases the risk of leakage. So it is very important to make a good choice for a material.

Flex- Incontinence Product

Almost every manufacturer of incomaterials has a Flex in the range (Only with the brand Abena it is called differently. The Abena Abri-Flex is a pant.)

The Flex was developed by TENA in response to questions from nursing and care professionals.

In the past people, for example in nursing homes, were taken to the toilet by two carers.

Standing on a slip on your own is difficult.

Nowadays, one carer takes residents to the toilet and bed.

Because you are short of hands and it is heavy. Especially with taller people who have difficulty getting around with their arms.

When applying a Slip, a caring person has to bend and turn at the same time, which is ergonomically a bad movement.

With the Flex they can stay upright, which prevents a lot of unnecessary strain on the body.

Inserts can be used together with fixation pants.

These relatively tight underpants keep the inserts in place, making it in the right place to absorb maximum moisture.

There are disposable mesh pants, such as those used in childbirth. These often come with a number in a package. There are also shorts to use multiple times. You can wash this at 60 degrees.

When the correct diaper and fixation pants are used, the chance of leakage is minimal.
It is an excellent, safe, hygienic and affordable solution for various types of incontinence.

Bed pad/mattress protector


An additional problem of incontinence is that the bed can get wet.

For example, when the incontinence material becomes so saturated during sleep that it starts to leak.

Or because it shifts through tossing during sleep.

There are also people who unconsciously pick their material.

In all these cases there is a risk of urine and / or feces leaking into the mattress.

The result is that the mattress stays wet for a long time and that there are unpleasant odors. (Incidentally, people who sweat excessively often also use mattress protectors.)

Washable pads

Washable pads placed over part of the bed usually measure 90 centimeters across the width and one centimeter or eighty high.

These pads are washable and can usually also be tumble dried. They have an absorption capacity, so they absorb urine so that you can sleep through.

Disposable pad

A disposable pad consist of a bottom layer through which urine cannot pass.

It is covered with a layer of cotton wool that is able to absorb and retain urine.
